Some Christmas Memories

With the Christmas break nearly over, we thought we'd take the time to share some photos from the holiday weekend past.

As you can see, Braelyn and Gwendolyn spent their Christmas morning with Mom, Dad, Grandma McKee and Nana Castellano at home this year.

All in all the day was quite a hit for our little twincesses:

On Christmas morning, the girls wore the cutest Santa pjs we saw this season (not that we're biased or anything)

Braelyn got a Mini-PillowPet in her stocking... Maybe she should have got some hair ties in there as well

Gwendolyn just knows there's got to be one gift left in her stocking

Out of our pjs and into our reindeer shirts for gift opening. Ooooooo... It's a Minnie Mouse doll!

Gwendolyn gets some unwrapping tips from Daddy

Braelyn opens a new doll from Mom

Nana shows the girls how to play their new MobiGo electronic games

Grandma McKee opens some holiday socks

Nana shows off a new wall hanging featuring photos of her four favorite subjects (Braelyn, Gwendolyn, Ava & Anthony)

The Holiday's Right Around the Corner

Well, the holidays are so close we can just taste it!

The resulting time off from the office has given Mom and Dad some extra time to spend with Braelyn and Gwendolyn.

Of course, there are moments that the additional time together has been a little more productive then others.

Gwendolyn is continuing to make great strides in her development. She spent her P.T. session earlier in the week walking back and forth from the living room to the end of the hall without much fuss. Dad was even called into service for this exercise session as he baited Gwendolyn by helping to hold items for her doll's dress up. Each time Gwen needed a new item of clothing for her doll, she'd have to walk to Dad on the opposite side of the house to retrieve it.

Unfortunately, her new braces aren't quite fitting as well as we'd like. Mom's packing her up and bringing her back to have them looked at today so hopefully they can be adjusted.

Nana and the girls made some more holiday cookies earlier this week... Needless to say, Dad was quite excited with this turn  of events while Mom joined his waistline in disgust.

The approaching holidays have also meant a few extra trips to the store than we'd normally make. Much to their credit however, the girls have pretty much taken this interruption in stride.

As a result of that corporation, we are proud to report that all the holiday gifts have been purchased, while physically wrapping them of course is a different story. Even more importantly (to Dad that is) is the fact that the ingredients for our Sunday feast are at home and ready to be called into service.

With that said, we'd better scram...

But before we do, we wanted to thank everyone again for all the support you've given us this year. We feel more and more blessed as our two girls grow and mature. Friends like you are a big reason for that!

A Busy Weekend of Tears and Smiles

Braelyn and Gwendolyn had quite a busy weekend.

It began on Friday evening as Nana came for a holiday visit from Florida. The girls were instantly excited for obvious reasons... Although one of the least obvious was because it meant that there was one more person on hand to read them books.

Poor Santa's going to get a complex soon

Before Nana arrived, the twins decided to give their good buddy Santa another go at the holiday party Dad's work threw... And predictably, things did go much differently than they had in the past. Here's hoping that he doesn't take it personally next weekend!

On Saturday, we celebrated our McKee Christmas. It began with breakfast at Grandma McKee's. After that, the girls joined their cousins at Build-A-Bear for a holiday treat complements of grandma.

Braelyn picked out a pink Hello Kitty as her plushy of choice while Gwendolyn went after a "Happy Feet" penguin with a light up bow tie.

Gwendolyn loves her new penguin
After a brief pit stop for some Zzzzzzzzzzs, we went back to Grandma McKee's for our holiday dinner and (most importantly) to open gifts. Pretty much everything they received was a hit... Especially the toy blender (which Braelyn immediately used to "blend" her sister's arm with) and toaster for the girls' play kitchen.

Now how can I turn this blender into a weapon?

Mmmmmm... Toast
Well, we'd better get going... There's still a lot of tasks that we've got to get taken care of before next weekend.

Talk to you soon.

Sweets by the Sweeties

While visiting with Grandma McKee this past weekend, the girls had their first-ever opportunity to frost holiday cookies. (And since Twinkle, Twinkle is one of their favorite car ride sing-a-long songs, we decided it would be appropriate if those were the cookie shapes they used.)

All-in-all, they both did quite well. Braelyn gleefully dove right in actually kept her patience long enough to complete the decoration process. However, it wasn't too long before she began to devour a cookie that seemed to be five times the size of her little mouth. Ah, the fruits of labor!

Gwendolyn on the other hand, first began observing both her sister and cousins to make sure she completely grasped the task at hand. (We know, not too shocking for her at all.) Once she was confident in that, she began frosting and sprinkling her cookie over and over again to make sure it was just right.

She must have been quite proud of the finished product too because she still hasn't even tried to eat her confectionery masterpiece. Instead, we had to pry it away from her and stick it in a sandwich bag so that it wouldn't crumble in her clinched fist. (Which, by the way, wasn't met all that enthusiastically by Ms. Gwendolyn. Apparently, she was concerned that Daddy was getting ready to eat her star... GASP!)

With each day, we get closer and closer to the holidays. For once, Mom and Dad have been on top of sending out our cards... This year, family and friends will actually receive them in advance of New Years, which is quite an accomplishment for us!

It's amazing what one can accomplish when you don't have a daughter making a December visit to the hospital (knock on wood).

Anyway, we hope you enjoy the week ahead.

Talk to you all soon.

The Cow Goes Where??

Another post from Mom!! :)

It's getting to be so much fun now that the girls are getting a bit older to start our own family traditions. There are a few that the girls are still a bit young for but that I really am looking forward to. For example, I'm going to be ALL over the whole "Elf on the Shelf" thing. I'm already planning places that the girls can find him. I also look forward to leaving cookies for Santa and finding a "dropped gift from Santa's sleigh" in the backyard. My dad did that one when I was little and I still remember it.

One tradition that we did start this year and the girls look forward to every evening is putting their sticker on their advent calendar. Nanna C. gave the girls cute little advent calendars and each night when we sit down for dinner the girls ask for their stickers. We show them the spot where it goes and sometimes the sticker lands on the correct location and sometimes.....not. :)

It's kind of surprising because usually Gwen is the meticulous one between the two of them and has great attention to detail. But she really has her own opinion on where these stickers should go. There is currently a sheep where the lantern goes, a lantern where the shepherds go, and shepherds where the cow goes. But we don't think Baby Jesus will mind in the grand scheme of things. Braelyn's advent calendar on the other hand is just as it should be!! They never seize to amaze us.

Rest & Relaxation For Once

For what seems to be the first time in recent memory, the Castellanos were able to enjoy some down time this past weekend. Braelyn and Gwendolyn even slept in until 8:00 AM on Sunday morning so there were extra winks to be had all around.

Braelyn has begun what Dad can only assume will be a life-long love affair with playing dress up. She even took it to a new level this weekend as she deiced to shove every crown and tiara in her wardrobe on her head at once. A little later, she was found sauntering throughout the living room wearing five purses on her shoulder simultaneously and telling us "good-bye" as she pretended to go shopping. (If you couldn't tell, we think she's been spending a little too much time around her mother of late.)

Gwendolyn's become our analytical observer (okay, maybe "become" is a poor choice of words since she basically popped out of the womb that way). She recently cuddled up to Uncle Kyle to get a good look at his latest toy... a tablet. In no time flat, Gwendolyn had pried the tablet away from him and seemed to be downloading apps at will.

Mom and Dad are trying to figure out exactly how the calendar seemingly went from August to December so quickly. Another holiday is nearly upon us and that just stymies the imagination.

One Scary Santa?

For those of you that have followed this blog for a while, you might recall that our girls still haven't reached a comfort level with Santa.

If you are new to the blog or if you would just like a good laugh, click here or here to see the fear on the girls faces during last year's visits with Santa.

Well, we took our first trek this season to see the Jolly Old Guy earlier in the week and sure enough, it wasn't pretty.

The good news is that Braelyn and Gwendolyn can now identify Santa and know that he says "ho, ho, ho!" But as soon as you put them on his lap and take a step away, panic ensues.

It will be interesting later this month when we have Dad's office holiday party to see the tears reemerge when we once again "abandon" them on Santa's knees!

'Tis the Season to freak out your children we suppose!

Our Twin Tree Trimmers and a Holiday Shopping Surprise

Before we go on, thanks again to Mom for picking up Dad's slack and posting all those fabulous photos of the girls in our last entry... Maybe Dad needs to take a blogging siesta more often!!!

We took the lead photo in this post yesterday as Braelyn and Gwendolyn "helped" hang ornaments on our family Christmas tree.

Luckily, Mom made the executive decision to stick with the shatterproof ornaments that we purchased last year after Braelyn took to picking off our glass ones and hurling them on the ground to watch them shatter.

Sure enough, the first thing she said this year when she saw them was "balls" as she pointed at them with a look that was equal parts excitement and mischievousness.

The good news is that no ornaments were harmed in the trimming of the tree this year.

;)

Sadly, now that the holiday decor is nearly all up, the realization that the Thanksgiving break is almost complete has begun to set  it.

We even braved the shopper-ravaged mall yesterday in the nuclear winter that was the day after Black Friday to pick out the girls' Christmas morning jammers and their shirts to wear for their encounter with Santa this year. Strangely, we found both with relative ease.

That's all for now... Talk to you all soon (we promise)!!!

A Post From Mom! (you've been warned)

Have you missed us? Yeah, things have been crazy as usual with seemingly no time to sit down and write out a blog entry. In fact the usual author of this beloved blog is at work today but Heather has the rest of the week off so your stuck with me again!
It's funny that in a household with twin girls so much changes while so much stays the same. Everything is still good on the health front. Gwendolyn has been smooth sailing lately. We've continued with our visits from OT, PT, and Speech. Gwen has made remarkable progress in all areas. Her speech has really taken off lately. She will repeat almost anything she hears. So be careful what you say around her. (We have learned that one the hard way) ;) Her favorite words right now seem to be "taco" and "cupcake". Leave it to our Gwenner to be that obsessed with food. She's also starting to put more sentences together. Just the other night I was in the living room and she was in the kitchen eating dinner with her sister. I hear her yelling from the other room, "Mom! Mom! Mom!" I said, "Yes Gwendolyn". And she yells in that sweet little voice of hers, "I Lu you!!" Man, I love that girl. Brought tears to my eyes immediately. Another huge development in her little life is the arrival of her very own walker! You may remember the loaner walker we had before. We affectionately referred to it as "big pimpin" because it was this wonderful platinum gold color. Well, we just recently got the walker she gets to keep and it's a more toned-down silver color. But of coarse my girl deserves a bit more pizazz if she is going to work as hard as she does to get herself around in that walker. So, getting some inspiration from other SB moms, I ordered some decals to "glam" up her mode of transportation. So as you will see in the pictures, we went with the pink argyle.
Check her out. You know you're jealous. ;)

One other huge milestone Gwendolyn has mastered this weekend is to finally separate herself from her beloved binky. It was our goal to wean her of this crutch when she turned two. I have to say that it was probably my personal fault that didn't happen. I think I was more afraid of beginning this process than Gwen was. I know a lot of kids rely on this comfort, but that small piece of pink plastic got our girl through some pretty traumatic times in her life. It was there for her when even we couldn't be. From being taken from our arms to go to surgeries, to nights in the NICU when we physically couldn't be there for her. Through sleep studies and urodynamic tests etc. etc. That binky was something she could always rely on. It kind of broke my heart to take it from her. But I also knew that it really was time. And hopefully, oh hopefully, she will not have any more of those times when we can't be there to hold her hand if she's going through something difficult. So.....how did we do it you ask? Well, it was Daddy's fault really. ;) Honestly, it started as a misunderstanding.   We had already only allowed Gwen to have her binky while sleeping and riding in the car. When we got back from Florida a few weeks ago I had taken away her car binky. That really only caused 2 days of crying to and from daycare (and uncountable rounds of the Happy Birthday song which was the only thing  that would temporarily stop her crying. Don't you dare sing Happy Birthday to Mama either. It ONLY works if it's Gwendolyn's birthday song. Just sayin...) Anyway, I digress. (hee...hee...that was for you Chuck) Back to taking away the night-night bink and the misunderstanding that started it all. We were putting the girls to bed and I just told Chuck not to give her the binky. In my mind I was telling him to just lay it in her bed and see if she needed it, but you and I both know how terrible husbands are at reading our minds, so he just took it and put it in the bathroom. I said, "What are you doing?" And he said, "You told me not to give it to her!" "Yes, I guess I did....but you and I both know that's NOT what I MEANT!!" So, that's what started it. Remarkably, she only whimpered for a little bit and then fell fast asleep! That was last Friday and still no binky.

Now on to Braelyn. Oh, my dear, dear, Braelyn. That girl is spunky!! She knows what she wants and when she wants it. But she doesn't always have the words to tell you what that something is. Her speech has gotten pretty good lately too. She loves to scream, "Mom! See? Mom! See?" Her favorite things right now are her babies and putting them "Nigh-Nigh" and playing in her kitchen. She loves getting out the pots and pans and stirring things with spoons. Braelyn also likes to pretend that she is a baby again. She wants you to hold her in your arms like a little baby. I have to say I love it. :) But for some reason she thinks babies cough a lot. If she asks to be a baby she will immediately start fake coughing. Covering her mouth and everything. Not really sure where that came from but it cracks us up every time.
She has also had a pretty big milestone of going potty on the potty. (or "poppy" as both girls say). She sits on the potty 3 times a day and goes pretty much every time. We are still working on losing the diapers but have a feeling that may be awhile. ;)

Well, I think that should catch everyone up for awhile! Really, I like getting all the cute stuff my girls are doing written down so that I can go back and look at it later. This blog has been wonderful for that. My favorite is going back to look at pictures especially from the first few months of their lives. Wow! We have come a LONG way baby!!  Thank you for following our family these past few years, and from our family to yours.....
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Please enjoy some random photos from the last month or so.
Enjoying a little snack in bed.

Waiting for more candy. (or cupcakes) :)

Maybe we will have Gwen do the blog post next time.

Gwendolyn's Five Minutes of Fame

We apologize for our recent exodus from the blog.

As you can imagine, the passing of the girls' Poppa was an emotional and time-consuming event.

With that said, we returned today to post a link to an article which recently ran in a local paper. It was penned by Mom about Gwendolyn's resiliency.

You can enjoy it by clicking here. (And don't forget to check out the picture slideshow of Gwendolyn throughout her first two years of life by clicking on that link to the left of the article.)

Also, thanks to all those that sent us condolence correspondence in regards to Poppa. He will be missed but we intend to keep his spirit alive through his wonderful grandchildren!

A Sad Good-Bye

Unfortunately, the girls no longer have their Poppa to cuddle with... But they will never forget the time they shared!

The Twins Two-Year Photo Session

We just got back the wonderful pictures from our girls two-year photo session. We'll put a handful of our favorites below but the very first in the bunch, which we also made into the new blog header, is the embodiment of why we love being parents to Braelyn and Gwendolyn.

Here they come... ENJOY!

Don't know why but this is already one of our favorite shots of the girls (probably because they aren't in meltdown mode or hitting their sister).

That's Braelyn playing hide & seek instead of standing by her sister and posing for a photo... It was a common theme of the day but she's so photogenic even these unintentional shots came out great!

Our very first true photo session shot of Gwendolyn standing.

Braelyn sports her trademarked smile.

Gwendolyn and her loaner walker (that we affectionately call 'Solid Gold' for obvious reasons).

Gwendolyn Goes Unbuttoned

This week, Gwendolyn again had her semi-annual clinic visit at the hospital.

As the photo above reveals, one of the results of that visit is that she had her MIC-KEY button removed. It was a welcomed advancement. In fact, she has nearly healed up even though we were warned it could take as long as five weeks for the wound the button had sat in to close. Better yet, (as the photo also shows) Gwendolyn seems quite happy that her belly now button free.

Luckily, the button removal wasn't an isolated moment as the entire visit went rather smoothly. Gwendolyn's specialists were very impressed with her continued physical advancements.

Outside of the fact she already needed to get fitted for new set of carbon-fiber AFO's, compliments of a growth spurt rendering her current set of braces obsolete, it was a rather routine visit.

Here's hoping her subsequent clinic visits continue this positive trend!!!

Dad's Lessons Learned from the Pumpkin Patch

Mom and Dad decided to bring Braelyn and Gwendolyn to the pumpkin patch this weekend. In fact, we convinced Grandma McKee to come along too. It really was an enjoyable visit and one that once again gave us quite an education (by "us" we really mean "Dad").

You see, there are some things that transpire and all you can do is shrug and chalk up to a life lesson. For Dad, here's a quick hit list that he learned this weekend:

1) Just because they say that the pig race will start at the top of the hour, it doesn't mean they actually begin the race then. There's apparently an elongated program that proceeds the swines making an appearance. It isn't nearly as entertaining as Dora (or so I'm told) and that renders two-year olds cranky. You can only exclaim "Oh, here come the pigs!" unsuccessfully so many time before your children are pretty sure you are a flat-out liar. Save yourself the headache and enjoy the sights on the farm for another 30 minutes. Oh yeah, as a special note remember that a pig race only last a few seconds!

2) Wet grass (or any type of wetness for that matter) and Braelyn are not fast friends. In fact, once she gets her knees wet, she'll spend the rest of the time pointing in disgust at them until her pants dry. (Side note: Don't let the kids get too dirty on Dad's watch... Unless the Dad in question is in charge of the laundry duties... Sadly, this Dad isn't!)

3) Children LOVE petting zoos... and they sure aren't thrilled to leave when it's time. (BTW, petting zoos with slides for exits are particularly exciting for little girls).

4) The only thing Braelyn loves more than petting zoos is a playground and she REALLY doesn't like to leave them when it's time.

5) Gwendolyn Marie would have been content even if she was on the deck of the Titanic as it sunk into the ocean. For the majority of the day, she sat in her stroller with her hands folded wearing a big smile across her face... That is until she saw the donkey at the petting zoo. That elicited an excited "There it is!!!" as her finger excitedly jetted in the donkey's general direction. (We still aren't sure why, of all the animals she saw, the donkey was the day's big winner. For his part, the donkey stuck out his tongue in her direction. Other than that and an occasional tail-swat at the flies, the donkey was pretty lifeless.)

6) Pay attention because this is the most important lesson from the weekend! Children are the most special of gifts. Each and every time you think you've got them figured out, you get turned on your head and start to realize that you aren't as smart as you once thought you were.

Enough about the pumpkin patch. As most of you likely remember, October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Just like last year, our friend Cassie, who pens the "Beyond Measure" blog, has taken the opportunity to spotlight some very special kiddos throughout the month. This past weekend, it was Gwendolyn's turn. I encourage you to click here and look at the entry... Mom added a narrative with The Gwenner's photo that still makes Dad misty every time he looks it over!!!

And if you don't regularly pop in to read the outstanding job Cassie does with "Beyond Measure" we highly recommend it. Her family has been an inspiration to the Castellanos and their little Caleb is one of the reasons Mom and Dad knew we'd be able to figure things out when Gwendolyn was born!
